Winemaker

Made on a small Tasmania estate — Chardonnay on weathered red-brown ferrosol over jurassic dolerite. Anonymous by design: the trade name is revealed on commitment, after the samples and the data have done the talking.

The history.

We kept the planting records. Block by block you can read which year went in and why — the early rows on weathered red-brown ferrosol over jurassic dolerite, the later infill, the one parcel nobody can explain.

What this vintage is showing so far.

A dry start to the season. We're leaning on the old roots and dropping a pass of water. The fruit is small and concentrated so far.

Philosophy.

Less, but better. Weathered red-brown ferrosol over Jurassic dolerite grows fruit with its own grip, so I extract gently and stay out of the way. No additions I can avoid, no oak that talks over the place.

Walked every row this week. Bud break is even across the blocks — the Chardonnay on weathered red-brown ferrosol over jurassic dolerite always wakes first. No frost in the forecast, which is the news I wanted.

Cover crop turned in between the rows. The bees are already on the mustard. Pipers River, Tasmania smells like spring.

Spent the morning re-tying canes the wind pulled loose. Unglamorous, but it's the difference between a tidy canopy and a mess in July.
