First green on the Syrah block this morning, a touch ahead of last year. Cool maritime, fog and wind funneled through a rare east–west transverse valley. If a cold night lands we'll be out before dawn.

Winemaker
A working estate in Sta. Rita Hills, USA — Syrah farmed on diatomaceous earth, sand, and clay-loam over marine sediment, cool maritime, fog and wind funneled through a rare east–west transverse valley. In the Crew model the winemaker stays anonymous until you enroll; until then the platform stands behind the data, the track record, and the samples. You meet them, and see the name, when you commit.
The old terraces were going back to scrub when we took them on. We rebuilt the walls, replanted the gaps, and left the survivors; the oldest vines here have outlasted three owners.
“Bud break came on schedule this year. Cool maritime, fog and wind funneled through a rare east–west transverse valley — I'm watching the canopy after last week's weather. Fruit set looks even.”
— the winemaker, updated this month
Less, but better. Diatomaceous earth, sand, and clay-loam over marine sediment grows fruit with its own grip, so I extract gently and stay out of the way. No additions I can avoid, no oak that talks over the place.

Pruning finished — weeks of work, every cut by hand. The old vines on diatomaceous earth, sand, and clay-loam over marine sediment still look sharp going into the season.
