Walked every row this week. Bud break is even across the blocks — the Chardonnay on gravelly ironstone loam over granite and gneiss always wakes first. No frost in the forecast, which is the news I wanted.

About this Crew

Revealed on enrollment
Winemaker
Made on a small Margaret River estate — Chardonnay on gravelly ironstone loam over granite and gneiss. Anonymous by design: the trade name is revealed on commitment, after the samples and the data have done the talking.
The first vines here went in before the appellation lines were drawn. We still farm a handful of those old blocks on gravelly ironstone loam over granite and gneiss, and rebuilt the cellar around them, not the other way round.
“A dry start to the season. We're leaning on the old roots and dropping a pass of water. The fruit is small and concentrated so far.”
— the winemaker, updated this month
I came up watching Chardonnay get pushed too hard for ripeness. I pick earlier than my neighbors, keep the alcohol down, and let Margaret River speak at its own volume.

Cover crop turned in between the rows. The bees are already on the mustard. Margaret River, Western Australia smells like spring.

Spent the morning re-tying canes the wind pulled loose. Unglamorous, but it's the difference between a tidy canopy and a mess in July.

One year of your life, inside one vineyard's year. You'll follow the winemaker from bud break to bottle.
