Walked every row this week. Bud break is even across the blocks β the Sercial on volcanic basalt with red clay on narrow poios terraces always wakes first. No frost in the forecast, which is the news I wanted.

About this Crew

Revealed on enrollment
Winemaker
A working estate in Madeira, Portugal β Sercial farmed on volcanic basalt with red clay on narrow poios terraces, subtropical atlantic, warm and humid on volcanic terraces. In the Crew model the winemaker stays anonymous until you enroll; until then the platform stands behind the data, the track record, and the samples. You meet them, and see the name, when you commit.
Madeira has made wine far longer than any of us. We farm a small parcel of it, by hand, the way it was taught to us β subtropical atlantic, warm and humid on volcanic terraces.
βWe had a scare with a late cold snap but the buds held. Now it's down to the summer β I want a long, slow ripening, not a sprint to sugar.β

Cover crop turned in between the rows. The bees are already on the mustard. Funchal, Madeira smells like spring.

Spent the morning re-tying canes the wind pulled loose. Unglamorous, but it's the difference between a tidy canopy and a mess in July.

One year of your life, inside one vineyard's year. You'll follow the winemaker from bud break to bottle.
