Winemaker

Made on a small Columbia Valley estate β€” Merlot on sandy loess and basalt over missoula flood gravels. Anonymous by design: the trade name is revealed on commitment, after the samples and the data have done the talking.

The history.

These vines sit on sandy loess and basalt over missoula flood gravels at 120–350 m. The estate has farmed Prosser, Washington for generations; we kept the old blocks and rebuilt the cellar around gravity.

What this vintage is showing so far.

β€œRain when we wanted it, then it dried out. The vines are carrying a fair crop; I'll likely drop fruit at veraison to keep the rest honest.”

β€” the winemaker, updated this month

Philosophy.

I farm the same blocks my predecessors did and haven't found a reason to change much. Arid continental, long sunny days and big diurnal swings, river-moderated. Pick on taste, ferment clean, age in wood that's already seasoned.

The Merlot pushed its first leaves overnight β€” two days ahead of what my notebook says. arid continental, long sunny days and big diurnal swings, river-moderated is running warm. I'll take it, cautiously.

Dug soil pits across the old block. You can watch the sandy loess and basalt over missoula flood gravels change with every shovel β€” it's why no two rows here taste the same.
